I use Canson Montval, 200 gsm Grain Fin paper for most of my YouTube tutorials and painting illustrations for surface pattern designs.
I like its delicate yet visible texture and its ability to absorb and hold water for a long time. This paper works great for loose, alla prima techniques, where a lot of spontaneous and freehand painting is involved. I love the textures and blends that watercolor paints can create on this paper, especially granulated ones. It also performs well for layered techniques when I paint within 2-3 layers. I always recommend this paper to my students for their studies. It is affordable yet of very high quality and allows painting in various techniques.
